Measurement conversion: printable worksheets
Express a measurement in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit within one system, with two-column tables, double number lines, mixed units and word problems.

What students practise
I can convert a measurement to another unit with a conversion factor.
Students write a unit fraction from a conversion fact, multiply so the old unit cancels, and check that the answer is reasonable for the new unit.
Key words
- conversion factor
- how many of one unit make one of another unit
- unit fraction
- a fraction equal to one whose top and bottom are the same amount in different units
- customary
- the US units such as inches, feet, cups and pounds
- metric
- the units based on tens such as metres, litres and grams
Common mistakes
- Divides when converting to a smaller unit, or multiplies when converting to a larger one.
- Uses the wrong conversion fact, such as ten inches in a foot.
- Writes the number without the new unit.
Standards
Common Core State Standards this worksheet practises.
- 4.MD.A.1: Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. (unverified)
- 4.MD.A.2: Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale. (unverified)
